Bertram's Guarantee

If you purchase a pen from Bertram's Inkwell at the suggested retail price, and the manufacturer does not offer a lifetime guarantee, you're covered for life by Bertram's Inkwell. If your pen has a problem, and you are the original owner, we will fix it, or if necessary, replace the pen, provided it is still in production. If it isn't, we will fix it as best we can. All you will pay is a nominal fee to ship the pen to and from the manufacturer.

Q&A

Which lasts longer? Fountain pen ink, a rollerball refill, or a ballpoint refill?
A rollerball refill will last an average of 30 legal size pages. A ballpoint refill will last an average of 300 legal-size pages. The fountain pen is the most economical because a 12 oz. bottle of ink will typically last almost a year. So, next time someone comments on your latest fountain pen purchase, just tell them that you are being economical!

Can you clear up my confusion about fountain pen ink?  I have read that both NOODLER’S and PRIVATE RESERVE inks can create problems for a fountain pen - clogging and staining from Noodler’s and mold from Private Reserve. A couple of pen dealers have confirmed this, and Fahrney’s (excuse the name!) says it doesn’t recommend Noodler’s at all.

What is your advice?

Richard B.

Hi Richard,

Happy to try. I, too, have heard this from various sources. While I don't carry Noodler's (not because of these issues, but because there are way too many colors), I have carried Private Reserve since it came out. Yes, there were mold issues in the beginning, but I have not heard of or had any in years. All highly pigmented inks can stain pens. Your stronger colors in red and green can stain pens. I always ask what pen the customer is using. Thin grip sections will show ink to appear to stain while thicker or solid colored sections show nothing. In conclusion, I find all inks will and can be flushed from a pen so the writer can use them over and over. Staining can and will happen with ANY ink because the ink leaches into the porous nature and micro scratches in the material, and it's virtually impossible to remove - think of a tattoo or scrimshaw.

Hope this helps,

Bert Oser
