Details

The Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age fountain pen is a completely new pen in many ways.  Even with all the nuances about it the pen is an everyday writer for many folks. Starting with the material: this pen is made from Lava.  Mined and processed in Italy, the lava is ground down to a fine powder, then mixed with bonding materials, cured, and then machined into rods to make pens. The result is a pen like no other in weight and comfort. The ratio of the lava to resin is not known to this writer.  It's evenly measured so that the user doesn't feel like he/she is writing with stone, but rather a medium and solid weighted writing instrument. Trimmed with another first in the writing instrument world: Bronze. What a perfect match to a pen that blends the ancient world, not only in material but also in the very name of the collection. The pen is fully equipped with the latest in writing technology where the pen meets paper. The filling system is reserved for only the premier collection of the Visconti line, but the price is more than 3/4 less than some of the pens that use the Power Filling system. The pen is filled by unscrewing a filler knob, and pulling the piston rod from the rear of the pen.  With the rod fully extended, the nib up to the grip section is immersed into the ink.  With one down-stroke a vacuum is created behind the piston and when the piston head is fully depressed, this vacuum is released and ink is sucked into the barrel. This operation needs only to be done once. What would a pen of this caliber be with just a 14k or 18k gold nib?  Well, it would still be a great pen, but Visconti went one or several steps further by equipping the Homo Sapiens with a 23kt Palladium Dream Touch nib in 7 grades. Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, Double Broad, 1.3 Italic and Stub. The Palladium nib has a soft spring to it for truly beautiful writing in the Extra Fine grade, a nib size this writer is not usually fond of. The larger nibs are exceptional in the areas of personal correspondence and journaling, drawing and creative imagery. Even the way the cap closes is not typical in that the cap closes on the pen with a spring-loaded inner cap that maintains pressure on the interlocking clutching system to ensure the cap is locked down securely.  Thus the cap won't unscrew or un-click in the pocket because of the constant pressure holding the cap in place. I like this pen a lot and has been in and out of my line up for some time now.

A favourite!
One of my top pen, both as collector item and writer... Really amazing feeling using that pen. It was a grail pen for me and it worth it! I had the nib professionally tuned and grinded, and it worth it for that kind of grail pen!
Its a great thing in my life to own that pen since I write a lot with it...
